We have happy seedlings and transplants. I did a lot of transplanting yesterday, flowers and celery and celeriac. Peppers and tomatoes were done a few weeks ago. The house is bursting, all the window sills and Kira's bed frame (mattress removed) are full of little plants reaching for the sun. Onions and broccoli got transferred to the greenhouse by the barn.

The high-tunnel has mixed salad greens growing 1" high and tomatoes waiting to be planted. We call it "Little Florida" in there when it is sunny and warm. First round of spinach, beets, carrots and peas are in the ground and I had some days where I was very tired not used to the hard work, but I am getting stronger by the day. It is great to be back in the fields, walking barefoot on the warm ground gave me a deep connection to the earth. I highly recommend walking barefoot on soft grass even if you don't garden.
Next on the list are parsnips and mixed salad greens #2. I am also bringing out ashes to add nutrients to the fields, about every 4 years a sprinkling.

The cows are moping because I stopped milking to have time for Goldie to grow a calf. I give them poor hay to slow down the milk and the grass is growing, they want out in the fields too. They stand for hours in front of the gate showing their wish. Steer "Ibiza" went to the neighbor farm because he became a bit testy . He is happy there with other young ones to play and we have peace in the barn again.

I have read and learned a lot about soil ( to till less and less to keep the soil life undisturbed to do their thing of bringing nutrients to the plants and protect them from disease better) and compost to add more fungal and nematodes to help to the job above. I kind of knew about it but more into it this winter. We had our soil tested for soil life and it is mostly bacterial due to tillage interrupting fungal hyphens to grow which nematodes like to eat....So to include manure to the mix it has to heat up to 150 degrees to kill pathogens and weed seeds ( if we add weeds which we have so many of) and a pile would need turning and monitoring, which I don't have time for. There is in vessel composting and I found a 10'x 3' diameter culvert to turn into a compost drum. It will be some work to make doors at the end and figure out how to turn the thing easy to mix and aerate the compost. The group "Compost for Good " out of Jay, NY has a make your own instructions for a much bigger and expensive drum.They have been very helpful in inspiring me and testing the soil, Thank you!!
