it is raining finally no more irrigation. I was ready to rake for a spinach planting last week and saw the cherry tomatoes lying down, wanting to be watered and it was dark when I was done with that, no spinach in the ground, but who can walk away when the plants are lying down? We since planted 800' of spinach and almost got the Mixed Greens planted. Today we planted the last cabbage and weeded under the netting. My skin is all wrinkly from being wet all day and I hosed off at the washstand before taking a shower, all clean!
On July 11 we had our first dinner in the field, catered by Big Spoon. 50 people came and we had a long table set up on the main path through the gardens right in front of Patreesha's flower garden and four beds of colorful greens. It was a delicious meal with four courses. All had fun and walked through the gardens in warm sunny weather. This was a first for this area of farmers, cooks and guests sitting at one table talking and eating together. (Well, the cooks were busy serving). We are planning another one for September. May be you can make it. It is like a small holiday.
Last weekend we had our 20th annual garlic harvest fest and harvested and peeled and hung all the garlic in one day. By 7pm we were swimming in the river and cooling off. Last year we did not get done in two long days and I could not sell all the garlic. We will be sold out early this year! Garlic harvest marks peak of the busy veggie season. Next weekend we are going on vacation for a week. Bob Wagner and the other workers will be in charge of the farm. I am planning on three naps a day, playing games with Steve's family and sitting on the beach with a drink. I have a book ready to go and only 100 things left on the list. hahaha...
Here is recipe from Martilda Larson for your beets. She could eat a big bunch every week she says:
