it is warmer and raining, but the ground was too wet to get anything in before the rains that would have been so good for germination. I try to see it positive that it will germinate the first flush of weeds to be done in before seeding the crops.
First I want to thank all that have come to the Pink House fundraiser and that have donated to the fund. It was an emotional evening for me and we had great stories and music. It was a great success. To date we received over $4000 to rebuilt and Rogerio is planning a new tight 16'x16' house to go up this summer.
Our next gardener and may be future Birdsfooter has arrived this week. Sal (Salvador)
from Potsdam has moved into the Log House and has delighted us with music most
days and enchiladas for dinner last night. He is finishing his biology degree in Potsdam and plans to be at Birdsfoot for the near future.
Zach has returned to the gardens as well. We were digging spring parsnips and sunchokes this week, burdock root today. He is also planning to stay on.
Ean and Miguel are planning to join us in late May and June through August. Phil who worked and lived with us for 16 month til last August has asked to come back, because he misses community. He has been in California for the last eight month.
You can see there is a whole fun crew ready to grow your veggies again. Your $$ give meaningful work to these young enthusiastic farmers.
Even though we can not yet plant outside we are busy inside. The tomatoes are about 8" high in pots right next to me in my southern windows. Yesterday I transplanted 50
eggplants. We had 20 eggplants last year and they grew well and we ate them all ourselves. Usually I can't get anything from them, but planting them under row cover and on a black liner ( that can be reused 10 years or so) did the trick. So we carefully expand, be ready for those large purple noses. If they do well again we plant more next year. They don't get late blight.
The Log Houses is home to over 300 peppers and 50 hot peppers in its southern windows and the greenhouse has all the onions, leeks and lettuce waiting to be transplanted. Yesterday we seeded the first broccoli, cauliflower and collards and kale.
The netting from Germany arrived and hopefully we will get flooded with broccoli this year. On the list for transplanting into 6-pack pots are parsley and celeriac.
This Saturday I will be giving a workshop in our greenhouse on how to seed and
transplant seedlings, how to make potting soil and a tour of the gardens. This is organized through the Sustainable Living Project. First workshop is Saturday 11am if mere then 12 people sign up there will be a second one at 1pm. You can sign up if you like.
We are going to visit a cow by the end of the month. Kira is very excited. The ducks are in heaven with the annual large spring puddle in their yard. I am waiting for their
first eggs for the season. Surfer is 11 years old this spring. I learned that ducks can get to be 20 years old. I wonder how long they lay eggs?
Please take a little time and sign up for the 2013 CSA or let me know if you have other plans this year. I am also attaching the sign up form for the Gardenshare Bonus Buck program to get help if you are low income.
Happy spring, Dulli
