It has only been one week but I thought to stay out of the Christmas week frenzy. So pick up is today. Your veggies are packed and already at the pick up site. Next Pick up is Tuesday, January 2nd.
Things here are still somewhat busy. Emma came yesterday for her last day of work this year and we unrolled giant 400lb hay bales over the late planted garlic. We huffed and puffed and they moved! After that we packed the bags for today. She is not sure what she is doing next year. She knows she always welcome back. Emma was in charge of your CSA boxes an bags this year an did a fantastic job.
Last week I went to several student presentations to see them show what they learned and their impression of the farm and community. One group always invites the farmers to a local special dinner where we all get to eat and catch up with each other. I really enjoy going to the dinner and presentations. I feel part of the SLU community.
Last week also got really cold and we had not made the well box, where all the Birdsfoot water comes from, enlarged after putting in a much bigger pressure tank this spring. We had thrown blankets over it, but that was not enough and we had major freezing and breaking of the pipes. I spent two days learning to plumb the thing that has house water cow water and garden water with lots of intricate joints. I had the wood stove in the greenhouse going trying to thaw the mess. I had to built the bigger insulated box first to put a small heater in to thaw , then take out broken parts, which meant taking it all apart and replacing them to find out the next thing was broken too, another trip to town for parts....Friday 6pm we had house water again. No more schlepping of cow water from the school.
Today I got the parts for the cow water hook up, just got back from town (delivering your bags) and barely made it up the driveway slush. There will be slush shuffling later today.
The absolute highlight of last week was that I got invited as a date for the "Greenhouse" formal. My very first American college party. Nick, my date picked me up at the farm and drove me to the house where we played games like beer pong. ( I was good at first, but then we lost ) and danced. I was glad when Steve picked me up at 11pm and took me home. I had so much fun and I think so did the students.
I hope you have a wonderful week and see you next year!
peace, Dulli
