we finally got the veggies for the winter CSA figured out We would like to start this week and then every other week till the en of January. Bags of wonderful tasty veggies are awaiting you.
Due to a seed mix up our beets turned out to be awful. It was a variety called grex beet chard under beets in the seed catalog. They make great greens in all colors, yellow, pink, red and white and the beets are colorful as well, but small and triangular, not good for storage.
After two plantings I decided not to grow them anymore. That last planting was in the almost dark and I accidentally put the seeds into the wrong seed bag and when I planted the "regular" fall beets it turned out to be a huge field of colorful beets and no red ones. Oh bummer, the cow likes them as I harvest 20' a day for her. I ordered certified organic beets from Kent Family Growers to have some for you and me. I have to throw out the top 4" of beet seed of the bag or order new seeds. I like experimenting with new varieties or crops. They are like pets in the everyday garden, something special to look out for during the season.
We got a photo session in with a professional photographer from Cooperative Extension and Gardenshare. They get to use the photos as well for their newsletters and so on. I can't wait to see them.
Three weeks ago I slipped on the path where there was no grass in the rain and fell onto our 1 gallon water bottle we shuttle for drinking water between the Main-house and Hugging House and I broke some ribs, which slowed me down a bit. I was worried about the digging season, but now they are better and I can do almost everything again, even lay on my side. Thankfully all workers and students did the grunt and let me supervise for a week. We still have more potatoes, parsnips and all the sunchokes to dig. Too much rain for most of it. So we are spending time cleaning up the gardens , rolling all the irrigation up and putting the tunnels and row covers away. Yesterday we cleaned up the high-tunnel and it is ready for rolling up the plastic for the winter. I love sitting by the stove right now, until the next student comes to go outside.
