October is here and we are still harvesting beans and zucchini. We weathered the frost two weeks ago by covering . And we are still watering the garden when there is not enough rain. A new planting of Mixed Greens is coming on and we put our last caterpillar tunnel over the beds. It is cozy in there. Just after we pulled the plastic over the bows it started to rain and we crawled in and weeded for a bit listening to the rain and staying dry.
I guess this is the last week for the Friday group and two more pick ups for the Tuesday group. We had reached the CSA $$ amount of $332 a few weeks ago and I hope you put all those extra veggies to good use. In the past years the tomatoes had gotten blight early and they are still producing some now. We get about 30lb of cherry tomatoes twice a week.
As far as the winter CSA goes I will write you when I have an idea of what we have. We will start in 3-4 weeks. The student CSA will go on with a break for the break. Let me know how the CSA was for you this year. A good amount or too much or too little of anything? I am thinking of more broccoli and less kale next year.
I am waiting for the carrots to fatten up some more and for the potato leaves to turn yellow to harvest. After potatoes are out the garlic goes in the ground and the manure goes on the garlic and then the cow can come home when the barn is clean. It kind of feels like a children book where all these things have to happen before the cow comes home.
Talking about cows. There have been two Angus heifers (young cows) from the next road loose for the past three month and they like us because we have apple drops and we mowed the fields in August. The owner brought us some grain to tame them and Rob can pet them a bit by now. So every morning when I walk out of my house to go to the outhouse there are two black cows right outside my door looking at me. We have to keep the back garden gate closed at all times so they don't wander into the gardens.
I am ready to call it a day and go home.
Peace,
Dulli
