It has been a long season and it is still warm. This week is your last pick up for the Summer CSA. I hope you had a good time eating and putting food by as we did. The root crops are just starting to fatten up now with the rains and I don't know the winter share yet. I hope to know within two weeks. We will be at the Canton Farmers Market on Tuesdays through October.
In the gardens the greens and lettuce are lush and growing well. We put a tunnel over the lettuce to keep the warm if it gets cold. The zucchinis got frosted last week their cover blew off during the night. Tomatoes in the tunnels are still green, but not producing much due to short days. Same for basil and peppers. The cabbages are filling out and I have 150 cauliflower sitting as leaves refusing to head up. They were planted in June and had soo much time, but did not like the heat under the netting I think.
Here is a recipe for the chard:
Birdsfoot Sesame dressing:
1/2 cup of olive oil
1/2 cup of nice vinegar
1/2 cup of water
1/8 cup or less of soy sauce
1-2 cloves of garlic or pureed garlic scapes
1/8 cup of tahini or toasted sesame seeds
pepper)
1/2 minced onions
a little honey or maple syrup
mix all and marinade cooked greens for some time
Please let me know how the season was for you and if you have any w3ishes or suggestions for next year.
peace, Dulli
I also want to put in a plug for a book by our friend Paul Hetzler that just got published:
book of nature essays, Shady Characters: Plant Vampires, Caterpillar Soup, Leprechaun Trees and Other Hilarities of the Natural World, was released Friday, 5 October--a few months later than expected, but I'm happy to see it in print. You can see excerpts at the link below if you're interested. Please pass this on to the BF community--thanks! Blessings! with warmest regards, Paul https://www.amazon.com/dp/099860609X (You can also enter Shady Characters Paul Hetzler in the amazon search bar)
