It is a beautiful cold day and I am trying to catch up on bookkeeping. We got most of the garlic in and use the frozen ground to spread manure without compacting it. The sunchokes are right on quota harvested at this time. We bought a new root washer, a 5' long slotted barrel horizontal that the roots slowly roll through as they get sprayed. It is so nice to not get cold hands washing the roots. We still have to sort them at the end and it is a handful to keep up with the washer. We can always turn it off to catch up.
Zach moved to Canton to be with his girlfriend and to be closer to his job at his winter job at the Blackbird Cafe. Sal is planning to move to Potsdam next month with his girlfriend, but will still work here on good days. We have a new friend coming to Birdsfoot in December. Matt Bowman who worked for the gardens in years past and is now starting his own business designing peoples gardens and yards with a specialty of permaculture, a sustainable design. I have an ad out, looking for an experienced farmer to join for next year.
It has been a fun year with the team, but most of them are ready to move on to new endeavors. I am so looking forward to a quiet December, bookkeeping, seed orders, sitting inside and enjoying the wood stove.
Carol is happy munching on hay, sunchokes, parsnips and apples, her favorite. I bought a small greenhouse and have a succession of barley sprouts going for her. The 2' by 1.25' greenhouse is in the Birdsfoot bathroom window where it is warm and moist. I can not wait to see if she will like them and if her milk production will go up. We are enjoying the first hard cheeses. They have a swiz texture and taste. The fence posts just arrived. Now we can fence new pasture for Carol. They are enormous.
The guinea pigs actually still had days outside, but are very happy to come in for the night. Now they are of course inside .
I hope you all picked up your share yesterday. It still has lettuce and kale in it. Here are some recipes for parsnips and sunchokes.
We are looking forward to Seba coming home for Thanksgiving. I wish you a nice Thanksgiving and enjoy the veggies.
