it's been a long time since I wrote. My brother and wife were visiting from Germany and I spent every free minute after long harvest days with them. And of course Carol the cow got her attention too. We are so lucky that the cow is co-owned and there are five of us milking. Kira and I do evenings and Jeff does mornings and Emlyn and Josh have their times
during the busy week. Carol gives about four gallons of milk a day and I make cheese twice a week so the milk is not too old. To make hard cheese takes about three hours and the cheeses have to be washed every day at first and less later. Today I hope to get my old cheese cabinet that has been used as a clothes closet back and tighten it up so that no flies can get in.
The gardens look great. Weedy but the crops are growing and the warm weather has boosted all greens and roots. We are busy harvesting potatoes which got hit with blight. We keep the tops away from the tubers and let them dry off in the sun for a few hours so they are dry. All cut or
injured potatoes are collected in the cut bucket and are kept separate to be eaten soon. Late blight likes moist potatoes or cuts.
The mixed Greens are still growing in the warm weather, but there are bad leaves from the frosty nights a few weeks ago and they have to be painfully searched for and taken out. We raised the price and it seems that the market and wholesale buyers accepted this. They are the best greens in
town I think.
You might have noticed your boxes are slimming down as the season comes to and end. There will be one more box for Fridays and two for Tuesdays after today. Mixed Greens and leafies and flowers are officially done since last week, but since we had so much we have given them out longer.
If you still owe money for the season, please pay up. We have payroll and I like to get paid too.
There is a wonderful dinner coming up at the 1844 House. It is a benefit dinner for North Country Grown Coop for the transportation fund to help maintain a refrigerated truck for deliveries. We would like to live of CSA boxes, but there are not enough of you so we need the whole sale accounts. The NCGC coop has been wonderful bringing our veggies to local restaurants and
the colleges and if you have the means to enjoy this dinner you can let me know or contact the number on the flyer by October 6th.
Next week I will give details on the winter share. Thank you so much for your support this season and enjoy your veggies, grown with love.
