A Letter from Germany

Dear friends,
as promised a letter from Germany.  It is Sunday and my sister Sabine is off to some meeting, Kira is sleeping and the living room is full of three musicians that spent the night after a fun concert that the house mates had organized in the center where my sister works.  So, I am sitting in the kitchen.  Yesterday we went to visit my nephew in Rostock.  We had dinner, walked the city and drove to the beach of the Baltic see.  It was good to see how he lives and to connect.

There was a protest group the rebels with a table at the market place offering lots of food items that they pulled from a dumpster at a food store to show how food is wasted and to offer to people to take home.  They were informing about food waste in Germany and the world.  I talked to them about the Canton Mondays dinners and Gardenshare and we talked about that people waste food because it is so cheap.  There is a medium sized movement of often young people turning vegan to not accept the conditions of how farm animals are kept, confined and fed.  The feed is often imported from countries that don't have enough food to feed their people. By eating meat so often land is used to grow feed and more co2 is released in form of cultivation of the land, having lots of animals releasing methane.  People also object to packaging , especially in plastic and shop at the non packaging stores where they bring their own containers and bags for everything.  Our house mates make their own soap, cleaners and toothpaste....  There is talk about a meat tax, to have minimum price for veggies, milk, eggs, meat to give more to the farmers....
Of course people are pro and contra. 

This is not the most exciting newsletter but it gives you an idea what is going on in other places.  I am having a great time with my family and friends, nonstop visiting and German food.
