Summer is here! Hot muggy buggy weather ahead, although we hope not as hot or buggy as June has been! You have already had a taste of what’s to come (snap peas, early carrots, zippy garlic scapes) in greater quantities. If anyone needs some new ideas for how to turn these into yummy dishes don’t hesitate to ask. Our local ‘chefs’ at the Birdsfoot kitchen are very creative at making interesting meals from them.
In the weeks ahead you can expect to find tender zucchinis, early beets, more herbs and the first kale in your weekly box. With enough balmy summer nights, the first tomatoes may just be ready later in the month. We are keeping close watch on those…
Now that wet weather is finally back, keeping ahead of – or close behind perhaps? – the weeds is a big challenge (for every gardener & farmer everywhere!). The dry periods in May and June actually helped slow the race a little. But weeds - being sneaky - never hesitate to reappear, in even bigger numbers…
So this is an open invitation to anyone, with a little time to spare, to join our ‘weeding team’ any weekday afternoon for an hour, or more, of joyful weed pulling and farm-story telling. We can guarantee you’ll get good mild exercise, fresh air, and the latest tricks we use to make weeding go quicker/easier.
Dulli and family have just (yesterday!) returned from their European adventures (see separate update below!) and she barely set foot on the farm before diving into the bean patch to do some weeding. Clearly she missed one of her favorite farm activities very much…
